BONSEKI〜The Tokyo Kuyo-kai, The Hosokawa School of BONSEKI

BONSEKI is the art of portraying scenery by arranging white sand, pebbles and stones on an oval or rectangular black lacquered tray or board. These white sand and pebbles, which are classified into nine types according to the degree of fineness, are used to delineate a landscape. Dark colored stones are placed to represent mountains or rocks in the scenery. Tiny tools-feathers,small flax blooms, sifters, spoons etc.-are used, and some miniature ornaments like houses or bridges may be added to this symbolic representation. The blackness of the tray creates an elegant contrast with whiteness of the sand, which gives a serene beauty to the BONSEKI art. Since it is depicted with sand, a slight touch to the BONSEKI tray may easily destroy carefully constructed scenery. In a form of BONGA, however, a special method to preserve a scene on a board is used, so that it can be framed and displayed on the wall. The most important thing in BONSEKI is peaceful feeling and satisfaction one can derive from its creating process, and not the finished work itself. It is said that the origin of BONSEKI can be traced back as far as to the 7th century. In the15th century, the art of BONSEKI saw a splendid progress as an aristocratic culture under the reign of the Ashikaga Shogun Yoshimasa. Then in the 16th century, the Grand Tea Master, Sen-no-Rikyu contributed to its sophistication. The bases of the current Hosokawa School were established by Hosokawa Sansai, who was a disciple of Rikyu and a very educated warlord at that time. The Tokyo Kuyo-kai is one of the groups in the Hosokawa School and actively works to improve basic Hosokawa techniques as well as to preserve classical elegance of this unique art.
